Urban Agriculture Across America

PBS is airing a new episode of the series “Food Forward” called “Urban Agriculture Across America”. It looks at food production in cities… the way it was done before the very recent advent of urban population booms. Check it out!

Spring Tasting & Strawberry Arrival

Welcome back from Spring Break everyone!

This past week at school we had “Spring Tastings” where lunch featured many fun foods found mostly in spring. Our veggie platter had the following

  • Asparagus spears
  • Baby Rainbow Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Icicle Radishes
  • Fennel
  • Green Garlic Aioli

Along with the beautiful platter students were able to taste two of our favorite spring arrivals: Pea Shoots and Strawberries!

We were delighted with the enthusiasm at ALL of the schools over the pea shoots. They are baby pea plants that are eaten whole and they taste just like fresh peas. Our organic strawberries were from Alba Organics (a neat farming education cooperative in the Salinas Valley) and they were wonderfully sweet. Everyone was excited to see strawberries again. We can expect to have them more often for dessert at school :)

Enjoy the warm spring weather!

Lunch Love Community

We posted about this website a while back and they’ve caught our eye again. Here are 2 great videos from Lunch Love Community. The second video is called “If they cook it they will eat it” and that rings true in our ears. Last year the first grade at Cathedral School brought us kale from their garden and we made kale chips with them. We haven’t been able to satisfy their kale appetite since…
